A Photographic Diary 1931-38 John E Simpson This book guides us through the author's own personal investigations of small independent railways in England and Wales during his student days in the 1930s. Each trip was carefully planned, a map drawn, and impressions recorded. Twenty-four railways, separate from the main system, are described and illustrated with engine photographs, maps, timetables, and tickets. This eye-witness account of struggling railway enterprises is unique, and must be read. The author, now in his mid-eighties, can look back on a eventful and creative life involving teaching, photography, gliding, and scientific research - all to the highest professional levels. He is still working at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge where he has written definitive books on Gravity Currents and Sea Breeze. Having recently completed a successful book on Manning Wardle locomotives, he decided to convert his youthful diaries and maps into a second book of railway history. The following railways are described.
